VIDYA BHAWAN

Secondary

Secondary Section (English Medium)

The first rays of sunlight shone on PVG’s Vidya Bhawan on 4th March 1977. This was the new brach at Br. Nath Pai Nagar Ghatkopar East. The area was at that time a vast stretvh of marshy lands, far away from vehicular noises of other areas. The site was a perfect  serene  atmosphere  for initiating  the teaching learning process for a school.

The vastu pooja of the land  was done at the hands of Shri. B. P. Talegiri, architect and engineer of M/s  S. H. Godbole firm and in the presence of  the life members  of the institution, the past  students of PVG, donors and  well-wishers  of Ghatkopar area on 12 June 1977.

Growth of Vidya Bhawan

Initially the school started with KG, I and IV standards with few faculty members. Mr. Mujumdar, Mr. K. N. Shirkande, Mrs. Taiwade, Mrs. Coutinho and Mrs. Subramanium.

The English Medium started with a mere 27 children and 3 teachers under the able leadership of the then Principal Mr. N. S. Mujumdar. Gradually the number of the students and standards increased by the year 1979-1980. The school functioned from Junior K.G. to S.S.C.The first batch of S.S.C. consisting of 14 students appeared for the Board Examination in March1980.Gradually
the school developed the three laboratories. The infrastructure of the school steadily developed and in 1988 the school developed the computer laboratory. We can proudly claim that ours is the first school to introduce a subject computer literacy for students and prepare computerized results as early as 1988.

Within ten years the strength of the school increased to 2100 students with a faculty strength of 50 teachers. Now at the end of 35 years we have students strength of more than with about 120 teachers. In the 90’s the school also started Junior College (XI & XII) in the Science Stream. Mrs. Saraswati Ramchandran, our teacher was instrumental in introduction computerliteracy for the students of Vidya Bhawan in the year 1988.Thus under the able guidance of our then Principal and now the Chairman Shri K. N. Shirkande the school has made a tremendous progress .And now the school has started the Senior College and the work of its 14 storeyed building construction work is going on war footing.

The school has a team of a devoted and dedicated qualified teachers.

Secondary Section (Marathi Medium) Ghatkopar

It was between the year 1952 and 58 that Kula guru Annasaheb Ketkar of PVG was elected as a member at Legislative Council from Teachers Constituency .His frequent visits to Mumbai resulted into a desire to start a branch of PVG in Mumbai, the commercial capital. On one of his visits he spoke his mind to the members of past students association of PVG, settled in Mumbai.

Accordingly, the past student organization proposed for the existing land at Nath Pai Nagar, Ghatkopar to Shri. Vartak, the then Revenue Minister of Maharashtra. The proposal for this land was immediately approved because it was situated at the fast growing location then. Thus on 4th March 1976 the foundation stone was laid at the hands of Past student of PVG, Honourable Industrialist Shri. Annasaheb Savarkar. Vaastu pooja was done at the hands of Mr. & Mrs. Telegiri, an architect of PVG. Since it was a reclaim land the water from the nearby Nallha use to reach till the school building.

On 13th June 1977, when the school actually started functioning there wqere 5 and 12 students for 5th and 8th standard respectively. The year 1978 saw the opening of 1st standard and pre-primary English and Marathi medium. There were only 23 students in pre primary and 11 students in 1st standard.

Yet the building construction work was not over and thus classes were held in the hall (Appasaheb Gargate Sabhagriha – now) by putting partitions. The construction work didn’t hamper the teaching learning process at all. The school was very keen about discipline. There was a competent staff that took efforts for the physical and the mental development of the children. The school soon gained reputation, the no. of students increased rapidly and there were full fledged classes from 1st to 10th standard in a due course of time. The distinguished feature of the school is that, it is a unique example where both English and Marathi medium schools go hand in hand under the same roof.
